The group studies historical themes which cover British as well as World History. The group has been running since 2015. The subjects studied are chosen by the group - recent themes have included: the Social Impact of the Industrial Revolution on Britain, the History of Ireland from prehistory to the 20th Century, and the Social History of Britain Post World War 2.
The group meets on the fourth Tuesday in the month in the Jervaulx Room at St Wilfrid's Community Centre from 3.15 - 5 pm. Each month 2 or 3 members undertake to research a topic and give a short (20-30 minute) talk to the rest of the group. We have a short break for refreshments with members bringing their own drinks -biscuits are provided by the group leader.
Our current theme, which started in September 2025, is the History of Romanovs. So far, we have looked at: Who were the Romanovs? Peter the Great and the Life and Legacy of Catherine the Great. Future areas we hope to look at include: the wars between France and Russia, the treatment of Jews and the Pale of Settlement, the Crimean War, the Emancipation of the Serfs, the assassination of Alexander II, the 1905 Revolution, Nicholas II – the last Tsar.
Group members pay £5 in September, January, and May to cover the cost of the room hire.
